UNRIVALLED ABORIGINAL EXPERIENCES // ISSUE 10

Welcome
Yura, or hello in the language of the Quandamooka people of Southeastern Queensland's Moreton Bay area.
First, we’d like to congratulate Lisa Rossmeissl, winner of the Join the Dots competition that featured in our last edition. Lisa will be able to add Central Desert artist Sarah Robinson’s painting Desert Eggs to her collection of Aboriginal art, thanks to her winning entry: 'Indigenous culture is the heart and soul of Australia. Their storytelling always leaves me with goosebumps and gives me such a feeling of connection.'
In this 10th edition of Connect to Country, a digital publication by Tourism Australia and Discover Aboriginal Experiences (DAE), we invite you to journey deep into Australia’s living cultures through immersive Aboriginal-led experiences that span land, sea, and city.
From coastal foraging adventures in the Kimberley to intimate yarning circles on Wave Break Island, discover how First Nations guides connect visitors to Country in powerful and authentic ways.
Do you live in fear of running out of battery or signal for your mobile phone? Australia’s First Peoples never had that worry. They mastered long-distance communication across vast landscapes using bullroarers, smoke signals, message sticks, and tree tapping. We highlight tours where you’ll learn about the communication networks that have thrived for over 65,000 years.
If you’re curious about Indigenous cuisine, get ready to feast on bush tucker that has been reimagined as fine dining — from smoked crocodile and green ant canapés to unique native flavours that may challenge your boundaries whilst delighting your tastebuds.
For those seeking a true tropical escape, dive into a seven-day cultural adventure across the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, led by local Indigenous custodians who weave culture, nature, and storytelling into every moment.
Bird lovers will find more than just sightings of the rare and endemic — Aboriginal guides reveal how birds serve as totems, messengers, and protectors of Country, turning birdwatching into a spiritual and cultural journey.
And finally, escape the urban buzz on a full-day cultural tour from Brisbane to North Stradbroke Island / Minjerribah, where sand, sea, and story blend in a rich Indigenous experience led by a Quandamooka guide.
We hope these stories inspire you to explore deeper, taste wilder, listen closer, and connect more meaningfully with the oldest living cultures on Earth.
Happy reading!
