Budjari gamarruwa, or g'day in the language of the Gadigal people of Sydney. In this third edition of Connect to Country, a digital publication presented by Tourism Australia and Discover Aboriginal Experiences, we’re taking a closer look at how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples maintained and shared their vast wealth of knowledge of Land, Sea, and Sky Country.
Aboriginal peoples are recognised as being the world’s first astronomers and Sky talkers give us a glimpse into the detailed scientific knowledge of the stars that continues to be handed down from generation to generation. Bush tucker experts explain the sound principles of healthy and sustainable eating — and generously share a couple of recipes that you can try at home. We also showcase some opportunities to enjoy traditional and contemporary performances by Aboriginal communities, and gain an understanding of the role of performance as a means of sharing vital information within an oral tradition. Finally, we give you a taste of the epic Kimberley region in Western Australia. Setting off from the cute coastal town of Broome and traveling through the outback to the region’s heart, Kununurra, we proudly show off some of Australia’s greatest treasures, including the Bungle Bungles, and meet some of the talented Aboriginal artists who live and paint on Country.
In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that this publication may contain images, voices and names of deceased persons.
