Gain insights into the significance of the Barka/Darling River to the Barkandji people through a powerful sculpture that highlights their ongoing struggle for water rights as a life-giving force.
The Barkandji people credit the Ngatyi, the Rainbow Serpents for the creation of Barka, the lifeblood and centre of Barkandji culture and identity. Artist Badger Bates’ impressive steel sculpture of a Ngatyi sits high in the Australian Museum’s Hintze Hall, honouring the Ancestor spirits of this land and asking all of those that walk beneath it to join in learning, and caring for land, sky and water health.
The Save our Ngatyi (Rainbow Serpents) sculpture embodies the deep respect and spiritual connection the Barkandji hold for water and the environment, a connection passed down through generations. Through its flowing form and symbolism, the expansive steel sculpture highlights the urgent need to preserve and respect the natural world, starting with the Barka/Darling River, one of Australia’s most iconic waterways.
